Project: BF Nelson Site

Project Features:

BF Nelson is a 14-acre brownfield former industrial site designated for permanent open space by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Located on the Mississippi River at 6th and Marshall Streets Northeast, Minneapolis, BF Nelson is in an important location to connect Boom Island Park, Nicollet Island, and other open space sites on the upper river.

Planned uses of the site are as passive open space:

  • trails connecting the area with other parks,
  • river overlooks
  • picnicking,
  • historical displays and other interpretive activities,
  • possible wetland restoration,
  • possible formal gardens and sculptures

  • Testing of contaminants completed—2004
  • Remediation Plan for contaminants completed--2005
  • $200,000 EPA clean up grant received--2005
